Harrington Hospital Campus Master Plan

Harrington Hospital (HH) enlisted DAI to provide a campus wide Master Facilities Plan for its Southbridge campus to address the increased demands for health services created by a growing community and the need to address long-term developmental goals, primarily the development of an outpatient cancer center. Based on input from the hospital staff, site conditions and an updated engineering assessment and building use analysis, DAI’s team proposed planning options that focused on the expansion of the surgery department, increasing patient beds, replacing the outpatient medical office building, and expanding on-grade parking. Upon analysis of the existing site plan, traffic patterns, building configuration, building systems and departmental adjacencies, DAI identified the East and West sides of the hospital as being the strategic locations for future growth and expansion. The completed Master Facilities Plan presented HH with three options to address their needs.

HH proceeded immediately with the development of a free-standing outpatient cancer center and in 2009, DAI was selected to implement architectural and engineering services for an 8,620 square foot Infusion Center. Patient comfort and privacy was the focus of the design and the center includes a cascading water feature in the main waiting room, WiFi capability and an American Cancer Society Resource Room where patients can access computers and literature. The center also has its own pharmacy suite. In addition, DAI proceeded with another component of the Master Facilities Plan, the Surgical Department’s Ambulatory Care Unit, which Monitor Builders Inc. is nearing construction completion.

The acquisition of Hubbard Regional Hospital (HRH) in Webster, MA prompted HH to authorize an update of the previously completed Master Facilities Plan. On the HRH site which is primarily outpatient, DAI has designed a new 24/7 Emergency Department for 20,000 visits and planned the backfill of multiple other departments. Monitor Builders Inc. is currently constructing this facility.
